BEV, PHV, and MHV available for major models, consolidating platforms into five types

Stellantis N.V. is pursuing the electrification strategy set forth in its long-term plan "Dare Forward 2030", announced in March 2022. The company aims to introduce more than 75 battery electric vehicle (BEV) models worldwide by 2030, and to achieve global sales of 5 million BEVs. The company aims to achieve 100% BEV sales in Europe and 50% in the United States, and to achieve carbon net zero by 2038.

Stellantis plans to launch 30 BEV models by the end of 2023 and 48 by the end of 2024, so each of its brands has been rushing to introduce BEV models. However, due to the reduced demand for BEVs in the European market in 2024, Stellantis has adopted a multi-energy strategy and is introducing plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) and mild hybrid vehicles (MHVs) in addition to BEVs when launching new vehicles.

The STLA (Stellantis abbreviation) platform, developed exclusively for EVs, can also be used for internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE vehicles), PHVs, and MHVs, working to reduce costs by consolidating the 20 or so platforms it has into five. At each regional plant, new equipment is being installed and lines are being renovated so that vehicles with various powertrains can be assembled on the same production line. For EV batteries, the company is promoting a strategy of using two types of battery technology: batteries that use ternary cathode materials (nickel, manganese, and cobalt: NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

The company is working with four battery manufacturers on plans to build seven battery plants, and it is reconsidering plants it had planned to build in Germany and Italy in 2024 in collaboration with Automotive Cells Company (ACC). The joint venture plant established in Canada with LG Energy Solution Ltd. began battery production. The company has also reached an agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) to build a joint venture LFP battery plant in Spain. In addition, the company established its own battery factories at its Madrid and Vigo plants in Spain.
